I would say that evolution is one of the most spectacular examples of how a speculative idea, for which there is no hard evidence, can come and overtake the thinking of a whole society––in fact dominate a civilization. In light of the tragic consequences of the evolutionary dogma, it is incredible to think that evolution is still being touted today as truth.

As I’ve noted in my book Fatal Flaws, outside of Scripture, Darwin’s magnum opus, The Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection, could well be the most significant literary work in the annals of recorded history. In other words, this is not some minor issue. Sir Julian Huxley called the evolutionary dogma it spawned “the most powerful and most comprehensive idea that has ever arisen on earth.”

It is the most fundamental of all intellectual revolutions. The twentieth century cannot be understood apart from this intellectual revolution. The far-reaching consequences of it can be felt in “virtually every field—every discipline of study, every level of education, and every area of practice.” The most significant consequence, however, is that it undermines the very foundation of Christianity. Nowhere was this more evident than at the Darwinian Centennial Convention, which celebrated the hundredth anniversary of the publication of Darwin’s The Origin of Species. With great pomp and ceremony Sir Julian Huxley proudly boasted,

“In the evolutionary system of thought there is no longer need or room for the supernatural. The earth was not created; it evolved. So did all the animals and plants that inhabit it, including our human selves, mind and soul, as well as brain and body. So did religion. Evolutionary man can no longer take refuge from his loneliness by creeping for shelter into the arms of a divinized father figure whom he himself has created.”

Of course humanity’s newfound autonomy ended up sacrificing truth on the altar of subjectivism. Ethics and morals were no longer determined on the basis of objective standards, but rather by the size and strength of the latest lobby group. With no enduring reference point, societal norms were quickly reduced to mere matters of preference.

The responsibility for demonstrating that it is not truth but in reality is a farce should no longer be left in the hands of a few hired guns in the bastions of higher learning. It is crucial that all thinking human beings are involved in the process of battling for truth. In this line of thinking, we recently featured a new DVD on the Bible Answer Man to help in this matter. It’s called Darwin’s Dilemma: The Mystery of the Cambrian Fossil Record. I talked with Dr. Jonathan Wells and Dr. Stephen Meyer, who are featured in the DVD on the September 10th and 11th 2009 editions of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, which you can access off our Website at www.equip.org.

An all-too-prevalent perception in Christianity and culture is that heaven is going to be one big bore. Pardon the golf analogy, but I’ve heard more than one person say that a never ending repetition of holes-in-one would make even Tiger Woods want to give up the game of golf. Of course, that is far from what heaven will be.

Heaven will be a place of continuous learning, growing, and development. By nature, humans are finite, and that is how it always will be. While we will have an incredible capacity to learn, we will never come to the end of learning. Knowing everything would be more like Hell than Heaven. We need progress, we need hope, and we need to look forward to knowing something new tomorrow that we don’t know today. Mystery is the food of the mind. If we truly said “I have seen everything” as Solomon said in Ecclesiastes, we would conclude as did the author of Ecclesiastes that “all is vanity.” Only omnipotence can bear the burden of omniscience. Only God’s shoulders are strong enough to carry the burden of infinite knowledge without losing the joy.

Here’s a couple of things you should think about when you think about the notion of whether Heaven is going to be boring. To begin with, we will never in Heaven come to the end of exploring our Creator. Imagine finally beginning to get a handle on how God is one in nature and three in person, or how Jesus can at once be fully God and fully man. Imagine exploring the depths of God’s love, wisdom and holiness. Imagine forever growing in our capacities to fathom his immensity, immutability, and incomprehensibility. And to top it all off, the more we come to know Him, the more there will be to know.

We also will never come to an end of exploring the Creator’s creative handiwork. The universe will literally be our playground. Even if we were capable of exhausting the “new heaven and new earth”, God could create brand-new vistas for us to explore.

One final point, we in heaven will never come to the end of exploring fellow Christians. Our ability to appreciate one another will be enhances exponentially, and it will always express itself more freely and in more diverse ways. Imagine being able to love another human being without even a tinge of selfishness.

Well will Heaven be boring? Absolutely not! We will learn without error––but make no mistake about this, we will learn, we will grow, and we will develop. I forgot who said this but someone made a great analogy when they said, “We in Heaven will remain like the tiny figures in a Chinese landscape, small subjects in an enormously larger objective world.” Far from being dead and dull, heaven will be an exhilarating, exciting, experience that will never come to an end. Now if that’s true we should fix our eyes not on passing vanities but rather on eternal verities. We should have an eternal perspective.

Recently I’ve been reading through the prophets, specifically Isaiah. In Isaiah 35:5-6 it says, “Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the dead unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.” Isaiah here is very clearly depicting the final eschaton, the final state and what it will be like. This of course begs the question, will there be a resurrection in which we have babies and old people or will we be resurrected at the same age we died?

Answering this question does require a bit of sanctified speculation. First of all, when God created Adam and Eve in Eden, He created them with apparent age. Also, Jesus apparently died and resurrected at the prime of His physical development.

Furthermore, our DNA is programmed in such a way that, at a particular point, we reach optimal development from a functional perspective. For the most part, it appears that we reach this stage somewhere in our twenties or thirties. Prior to that stage, the development of our bodies exceeds the devolution of our bodies. From this point on, the rate of breakdown exceeds the rate of buildup, which eventually leads to physical death. With age, our muscles get shorter, our connective tissues degenerate, our hormone levels decline, our neurological functions break down. All of this is to say that if the blueprints for our gloried bodies are in the DNA, then it would stand to reason that our bodies will be resurrected at the optimal stage of development determined by our DNA. So it stands to reason that when a person dies in faith as an infant or in old age that they will be resurrected physically mature as God originally intended them to be.

Finally, one thing can be stated with complete certainty: In the resurrection, there will be no deformities. You will be the perfect you, and I will be the perfect me. Peter Kreeft provides a poignant portrayal of how the body, tarnished by the Fall into a life of constant sin terminated by death, will be utterly transformed in the resurrection:

The fall turned things upside down between soul and body. Before the Fall, the body was a transparent window, a totally malleable instrument, a perfectly obedient servant of the soul. The Resurrection restores this relationship. Once the perfected soul is perfectly subject to God, the perfected body can be perfectly subjected to the soul, for the soul’s authority over the body is a delegated and dependent authority…Soul will no longer be frustrated by a semi-independent, recalcitrant body…and body will be a bright ray of light from soul, not an opaque object; it will be more subject, less object, more truly mine, truly me. No more will I crave ecstatic out-of-the-body experiences, for the higher flights of mystic ecstasy will be in this new body.[1]

We will then have a new body-soul unity for which we long. If we say we want to go to heaven, I think it is incumbent upon on us to know just what heaven will be like.
