Today’s Bible Answer Man broadcast includes the following topics:
Hank’s Prologue:
- Hank reflects on President Obama’s bathroom edict, which compels public schools across the nation to permit restroom and locker room access on the basis of gender identity rather than biological sex. Noting a sizeable group of clergy in Charlotte, NC, who defend transgenderism, Hank focuses on the work of Dr. Paul R. McHugh, who is the University Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Medical School and former psychiatrist–in-chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. McHugh has been studying transgendered people for 40 years and concludes that gender dysphoria (feeling that one’s emotional and psychological gender identity is not aligned with one’s biological sex) “should be treated with psychotherapy, not surgery.” In fact, says McHugh, gender dysphoria “belongs in the family of similarly disordered assumptions about the body, such as anorexia nervosa and body dysmorphic disorder. Its treatment should not be directed at the body as with surgery and hormones any more than one treats obesity-fearing anorexic patients with liposuction. The treatment should strive to correct the false, problematic nature of the assumption and to resolve the psychosocial conflicts provoking it. With youngsters, this is best done in family therapy.”
