Hank shares on reading Leviticus 8 about the priest placing blood on the lobe of the ear, right thumb, and big toe. Smearing or dabbing rituals in ancient Near Eastern cultures focused upon entrances as a means of cleansing from impurity and protection from sacred contagion. The ear represents what we hear, the thumb represents what we do, and the foot the path we walk. So, the priest had to be sacred in all their ways. This is like surgeons washing prior to doing surgery. We grasp the power of the germ. We need to grasp the power of our depravity and the holiness of God. Leviticus serves as a reminder of the debt that needed to be paid so that we might be reconciled as unrighteous creatures to a righteous God (0:48).
