On today’s Bible Answer Man broadcast (05/18/21), Hank continues in his series on the Gospel of Matthew, getting into chapter 6. Here Jesus instructs listeners to not give to the needy in front of others so that they will be seen by them, instead, He says, “do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you” (Matthew 6:3-4 NIV). The first discipline in a triad that Hank will be talking about during this chapter is the discipline of almsgiving, which should not be surprising. The love of money often represents the greatest challenge to the love of the Master and to those who are created in the Master’s image and likeness. Jesus then goes on to speak about prayer, the second discipline in the triad. Here Jesus says that we ought not to pray “like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others” (Matthew 6:5 NIV), rather He instructs us to pray in secret. Jesus then teaches us how to pray, giving us what is known as the Lord’s Prayer.
