On today’s Bible Answer Man broadcast (06/07/21), Hank speaks a little further on the topic of fasting and living disciplines before moving onto the next part of Matthew chapter 6, in which Jesus speaks about storing up treasures. Christ’s message in the Sermon on the Mount is crystal clear; rather than fixate on earthly vanities, we ought instead to focus on eternal verities. He warned his followers not to store up for themselves “treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal” (Matthew 6:19 NKJV), instead, store up “treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matthew 6:20). For to treasure that which is subject to destructive forces is to treasure that which is temporary rather than that which is eternal. Conversely, the kingdom of God and his righteousness constitute eternal treasure. Thus, the heart that is fixed on eternity will never lose that which it treasures.
