Hank Hanegraaff, the host of the 𝘉𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘈𝘯𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘔𝘢𝘯 broadcast and the 𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘜𝘯𝘱𝘭𝘶𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘥 podcast, continues through the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 8. Jesus’ third miracle in this chapter takes place at Peter’s house and is the fountainhead of an avalanche of miracles. “When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: ‘He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases” (Matthew 8: 14–17 NIV). Here, as elsewhere in Matthew’s Gospel, we are reminded that Jesus is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. That He was “pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53: 5). And not only is Jesus the fulfillment of our spiritual healing, but by quoting Isaiah, Matthew identifies Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament in that He did what no one else could have done. He “healed all the sick.” “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.” All such healings point to Jesus as the redemption of ailing humanity. Perhaps I should mention here the common refrain of health and wealth teachers that “by his stripes we are healed.” Ironically, these words extracted from Isaiah 53: 5, are not meant to convey physical healing. Rather with these words, Isaiah clearly has spiritual healing in mind.
