THE CHRISTIAN AND ROCK MUSIC- Introduction
Rock music — does it play to the beat of demons? Is it of the Devil?

THE CHRISTIAN AND ROCK MUSIC- Who Is Right?
All is not well in the world of rock and roll. Many of today’s biggest rock stars promote violence, drug abuse, sexual immorality, and occultism by both their songs and lifestyles. With an image like this, it’s no wonder that many Christians believe rock music was spawned by the Devil himself. Nevertheless, there are other Christians who see absolutely nothing wrong with rock music — whether performed by Christian or secular artists. So which side is correct?

THE CHRISTIAN AND ROCK MUSIC- The Relevant Facts
Well, if we’re to evaluate the situation fairly, we need to avoid simplistic answers and consider the relevant facts. First, music itself can hardly be considered evil. After all, many songs have been composed which convict sinners, encourage saints, and glorify God. Second, solid evidence showing that particular rhythms are inherently sinister has yet to be produced. Finally, there are a number of Christian rock artists who have responsibly and effectively used their music as a ministry. From this, we can conclude that the beat which characterizes rock music is not, in and of itself, demonic.

THE CHRISTIAN AND ROCK MUSIC- The Problem with Secular Rock
Much of rock music’s problems — particularly, secular rock — lies in its lyrics, which are predominantly destructive and anti-Christian. The solution, however, is not to reject rock music altogether, but to replace the rock of the ungodly world with the rock of godly musicians. When listening to a song, ask whether the song or the group militates against God; whether it promotes anti-Christian attitudes; whether it causes spiritual bondage; and whether it is a stumbling block to others. Most importantly, be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading to discerning God’s will concerning the music that feeds your ears…and your mind. As someone who has taught memory seminars around the world, I can tell you firsthand about the destructive influence of programming like MTV and others which infiltrate the mind through the two most powerful inroads to your memory — your eyes and your ears. So please, guard your heart and guard your mind. On the Christian and rock music, that’s the CRI Perspective. I’m Hank Hanegraaff.
