In the 19th century, John Nelson Darby contended that God had two distinct people with two distinct plans and two distinct destinies. Only one of those peoples—the Jews—would suffer tribulation. The other—the church—would be removed from the world in a secret coming seven years prior to the second coming of Christ. Early dispensationalists were content to be mere spectators to unfolding events. Today’s brand, however, is bent on ensuring that the horrors of Armageddon become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
