Hank Hanegraaff, president of the Christian Research Institute and host of the 𝘉𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘈𝘯𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘔𝘢𝘯 broadcast, reminds us of the reason that we rejoice at Christmas. The baby born to Mary and Joseph was no ordinary child. St. Matthew makes this plain when he says this child is the ultimate fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy of Immanuel—“God with us” (Matthew 1:23; Isaiah 7:14). The self-revelation of God to humankind. The Lord Jesus was and eternally is God incarnate—literally God in flesh. “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14 NIV). In the Incarnation, Jesus Christ was and is truly God and truly Man—that is, He exists as the perfect unity in one Person of a divine and a human nature. This reality is eloquently expressed in Scripture. “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:5–8 NIV). We celebrate the coming of Jesus Christ this Christmas season in tandem with the reality that He “died for our sins according to the Scriptures” and “that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3–4). St. Paul says the resurrection of Christ is of first importance because if Christ is not raised, we are among all men most miserable—we are yet dead in sin. But Christ has risen indeed! And so we who long for His appearing will too rise immortal, imperishable, incorruptible, as the children of Messiah—the long-awaited Christ who came into the world and will most certainly come again. Merry Christmas!
