Hank Hanegraaff, the host of the 𝘉𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘈𝘯𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘔𝘢𝘯 broadcast and the 𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘜𝘯𝘱𝘭𝘶𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘥 podcast, continues through the Sermon on the Mount, picking up the end of chapter 6, with brief thoughts on Christ’s command, “Do not worry” (Matthew 6:25–34). Worry is the province of paganism—pagans know nothing about God as “Our Father.” Pagans imagine that they have to provide for themselves; disciples of Christ ought to know better. Those who seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (which is the mark of all true disciples) will participate in His blessings. When God’s kingdom and his righteousness are preeminent in our lives, everything else will fall into place as well. Hank then moves into chapter 7, verses 1–6, beginning with the command, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way, you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Matthew 7:1–2 NIV). This is perhaps the most popular verse in Scripture—at least, that is, for skeptics! The Lord Jesus here is not contradicting what He says elsewhere in Scripture. For example, in John 7:24, the Lord says, “Stop judging by mere appearances and make a right judgement.” Likewise, St. Paul tells the Corinthian Christians that they are to rightly judge those within the Church who manifest wickedness rather than virtue formation. And St. John instructs his hearers not to believe every spirit, but rather to test or judge the spirits to see whether or not they are from God. The point here is that we must never judge self-righteously or hypocritically. Rather, when we judge we should do so rightly and righteously.
