Writing primarily to a Jewish audience, the apostle Matthew’s priority is to establish the credentials of Christ as the promised Jewish Messiah—the fulfillment of Messianic prophecy. Thus, Matthew announces the Lord Jesus as the son of David and the seed of Abraham. Matthew’s Gospel is patterned after the five books of Moses (Pentateuch) and sequenced around five of Messiah’s major messages: (1) Sermon on the Mount; (2) Sermon on the Commissioning of the Twelve; (3) Sermon on the Secrets of the Kingdom; (4) Sermon on the Secret of Forgiveness; (5) Sermon on the Judgment of Jerusalem.

Matthew uses gematria to organize the genealogy of Jesus into three groups of fourteen, the numerical equivalent of King David’s name. The genealogies are not exhaustive but provide us with the most significant names in the lineage of Jesus. Matthew quotes liberally from prophets such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, and David to underscore the reality that the Jewish sacrificial system symbolized in the Old Covenant finds its substance through Jesus in the New.

Using his popular LEGACY acronym (Location, Essence, Genre, Author, Context, and Years) for introducing books of Scripture, Hank Hanegraaff provides background information and an overview of the Gospel of Matthew—the first book of the New Testament. For years Hank’s wife Kathy has been telling him that he ought to teach through the Bible. Instead of just answering questions that people give to him on the Bible Answer Man broadcast, he ought to anticipate those questions as he goes through the Word of God. And so in this video Hank begins a journey teaching through the Gospel of Matthew.

Hank Hanegraaff is president of the Christian Research Institute and host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast and the Hank Unplugged podcast.
