Hank Hanegraaff, host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, reads Matthew 5: 1–11 and dives into the first of the beatitudes. The Mountain, in Scripture, is a place of revelation. A place where God reveals Himself to His people. God reveals Himself to Moses on Mount Sinai. Not only the law but His name and His plan for humanity. Now in what is popularly referred to as the Sermon on the Mount, God incarnate reveals not only the principles of the kingdom but the people of the kingdom. Who are they? They are blessed ones in the city of God; beggars in the city of man. Dependent on God; despised by the godless. They are the salt and light of the world—people without whom culture collapses. “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). Whether rich or poor, they bear the spirit of poverty. Put another way, they realize that they are totally, completely, dependent on God. Those who trust in riches are fools. Those who trust in God are blessed for theirs is the kingdom of heaven; theirs is spiritual abundance in this life and in the life to come their inheritance is God Himself. How is such blessedness manifested? The answer is by unspeakable joy. A joy that is in you, says Jesus, and the joy that is complete (John 15:11). The disciples of Christ, the 12, and all who take up their crosses and follow Jesus are the poor in spirit. They forsake all and follow Jesus. For He is the One of greatest value. And in the process, they realize what it means to experience life that is life to the full union with God as partakers of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4).
