Hank Hanegraaff, host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, continues working through the beatitudes. “Blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted” (Matthew 5:4). In other words, blessed are those who continuously lament and repent, for they will experience the continuous comfort of God Himself. Those who mourn over those who suffer, those who mourn the state of fallen humanity and above all our own sinful proclivities, find comfort in the God who will put all things to right. “Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth” (Matthew 5: 5). Here as during the entirety of His ministry, Jesus quotes directly from the treasure chest of Old Testament writings. “The meek,” said King David, “will inherit the earth” (Psalm 37). His words are prophetic with respect to Jesus. For our Lord is the ultimate example of virtue rather than vain glory. He is the ultimate personification of meekness. Jesus said, “Learn from Me for I am meek and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11: 29). “The meek will inherit the earth” is a promise for not only the future but now. Those who are virtuous, gentle, and patient will experience life that is life to the full in the present as well as in the new heaven and new earth coming down out of heaven from God. The meek have mastery over their passions and thus possess the greatest of all treasure. Their lives are not turbulent like troubled waters but placid and peaceful. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled” (Matthew 5: 6). To hunger and thirst for righteousness means to desire the presence of God and His kingdom as one desires food and drink after a long period of fasting.
