The Gospel of Matthew: Teaching on Theotokos (Mary) and the Ancestry of Jesus the Messiah

Hank Hanegraaff, president of the Christian Research Institute and host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, continues his teaching on Matthew chapter one. What should the Christian’s disposition be toward Mary? Just a sinner, like all of us are sinners? The church has historically referred to Mary as “Our All-holy, immaculate, most blessed and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary”—not to provoke us to worship the creature in place of her Creator, but to affirm the ever-Virgin Mother of our Lord as the new Holy of Holies, in which the Shekinah glory of God dwelt in human form. Why does Matthew designate Jesus Christ the “Son of David”—when David was an adulterer and a murderer? David is a repentant sinner and as such functions as a type for all repentant sinners. If God can forgive David of adultery and murder, He can forgive each one of us—but we must repent and receive His grace and forgiveness through faith. How important is the ancestry of Jesus? Israel had twelve sons. By identifying Messiah as a descendant of the tribe of Judah, God eliminated the descendants of eleven other tribes. Messiah was a Jew from the house and lineage of David. And Jesus is specifically identified in the Old Testament prophetic oracles as a light to the Gentiles—had the prophets identified Him as a parochial Jewish Messiah, Jesus could not have emerged through the doorway of Old Testament prophecies.
